2017 Coaches

BCO's staff consists of some of the most experienced and most successful coaches around Vancouver.  Many have taken volleyball specific coaching training and are National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certified.  Please have a look through the short biographies of each coach involved this 2017 volleyball club season that spans from January to May.

Colleen Ring

Head Coach - 13U Black Program

Colleen has coached with BCO since 2015 and has been actively involved in the North Shore volleyball community. 








Jess Young

Head Coach - 14U Program

Jess played for BCO and won gold at 18U provincials and bronze at nationals in 2011. She went on to play five years with SFU, and has been an assistant coach with Action and BCO for the past 6 years. Jess started her coaching career as the head coach of her own senior school volleyball team and hasn't looked back since.


Kat Dolugikh

Assistant Coach - 14U

Kat began coaching with BCO in 2015, and currently plays with the SFU Women's Volleyball team. 


Kathy Finch

Mentor Coach - 14U Girls
NCCP Level 2 Fully Certified

Kathy has been coaching BCO for 8 years, ranging from 13U to 16U.  Kathy has also coached high school volleyball on the North Shore for almost 20 years -- almost as many years as she has been teaching.  She has coached the Bantam level all the way to the Senior level.  Kathy is proud to have seen the game change incredibly, having played club and college when sets went to 15, had sideouts, and no libero.  Kathy enjoys coaching immensely and loves being involved with so many great players and coaches.  


Ben Ricketts

Head Coach - 15U Program

Ben played five seasons at Capilano University where he was captain and set for the Blues Mens volleyball team. In the 2012-2013 season, Ben's team won the PACWEST Championship and finished fifth in the nation. Ben has spent many years coaching both indoor and beach volleyball for various organizations all around the lower mainland. This is Ben's third year Head Coaching the 15U program.


Ben Ta

Assistant Coach - 15U Black

Ben is a former member of the Capilano Blues Men’s Volleyball team, where he played from 2010-2014, and UBC Men's Volleyball team in 2015. Ben played for the provincial team in 2010 and also competed as a member of the Team BC provincial squad in the 2012 20U NTCC competition. Ben began as an assistant coach in 2010 for the BNSS Junior boys team, and has coached beach and indoor volleyball all over the Lower Mainland. Ben has been an Assistant Coach with the BCO 18U Black team for the past 3 seasons, and is excited to move to the 15U level this year.







Shon Sim

Head Coach - Boys Program
NCCP Level 2 Trained

Shon played a year of Junior Varsity at UBC and has been coaching since 1997. Shon has coached senior high school volleyball on both the boys and girls side with great success. At the club level, Shon has worked with boys and girls at 16U/15U/14U/13U. Currently, Shon's main focus is the boys program and in 2011 he was the Head Coach of the BCO Boys 16U program - this squad of young athletes came away with a Canadian Division 2 - National Banner with three players from that squad going on to play post secondary volleyball. His hope is to see his many young athletes grow into leaders in sport and their community, ultimately giving back as coaches down the road.


Rob Gowe

Head Coach - 16U Girls Program
NCCP Level 2 Fully Certified

Rob is currently an Assistant Coach with the SFU Women's team and Head Coach with the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence (VCCE) in North Vancouver.  He has also coached over 10 years of club volleyball at various ages. In the past, Rob has also coached the15U BC Summer Games girls teams for Zone 3 and 4, as well as Team BC Boys 17U.


Meghan Koven

Assistant Coach - 16U Black

Meghan is currently in her second year with the Capilano Blues Women's Volleyball team. She played BCO from U13-18 and was the starting libero on the 2014 squad that won Div 1 National Championships.


Devon May

Head Coach - 18U Elite

Devon is just finished her fourth year with Simon Fraser University as a Power Hitter/Defensive Specialist. Devon was a former athlete of BCO, having played at the 18U level during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Devon, along with her beach partner, also took home the Gold as part of the Zone 5 17U Girls Beach team during the 2012 BC Summer Games. For the past 3 seasons, Devon has been an Assistant Coach with the 15U Black team, and is excited to switch age groups and work with the 18U Elite athletes this year. Devon loves working with and helping to develop both beach and indoor volleyball players.


Tony Laurita & John McGowan

Assistant Coaches - 18U Elite Team

Tony and John have been coaching with BCO for many years. In 2015, they were assistant coaches (and a master of dad-jokes and a statistician, respectively) with the club's first 18U National Gold medal. Both Tony and John have extensive coaching prowess at the high-school level and have recently began expanding their knowledge to the USport level with the UBC Women's Volleyball Team.

Leo Wong

Head Coach - 13U Black Team

This is Leo's first year coaching with BCO and he is excited to bring his experience from other high level sports to volleyball.

Emma Bulowski

Assistant Coach - 13U Black

Emma is in Grade 12 and switched from playing to coaching volleyball when she decided skiing was her true passion.

Amelia Sponza

Head Coach - 14U

Amelia is a past BCO player who went on to pursue a degree at SFU. This is her first year returning to BCO as a coach.

Liz Kirkwood

Trina Hewlett

Mentor Coach - 14U Girls
NCCP Level 2 Fully Certified

Trina has been coaching volleyball for 15 years in the North Vancouver School District, as well as for BCO.













Mika Janzen

Head Coach - 15U Red

Mika played with BCO from U14-18, finally ending up as a "volleyball kid" after being a multi-sport athlete for many years. She returned to the North Shore and coaching volleyball after completing her undergraduate degree at Queen's University. For the past two seasons, she was an Assistant Coach with the 18U Elite team, but is excited to take the lead at 15U this year. She also runs the BCO Social Media accounts and takes great pride whenever someone comments "#captiongoals". Mika's favourite part of coaching is facilitating young athletes' growth both on and off the court.


Keeley Bell

Assistant Coach - 15U Red

Keeley played 4 years with BCO and is now in her second year as a middle blocker with the Capilano Blue's Volleyball Team. After bouncing back from a knee injury, Keeley has recently returned to playing with renewed enthusiasm. 


Natalie Glover

Assistant Coach - 15U Red
Natalie played with BCO before completing her undergraduate degree at Queen's University. In her senior year, Nat won gold at provincials and bronze at nationals with BCO.

Shannon Hopkins

Head Coach - 16U Black

Shannon played 5 years each at BCO and Queen's University. In 2011, her 18U team won Gold at 2011 Provincials and Bronze at Nationals. Since returning to North Vancouver, Shannon has been involved in coaching BCO camps and at the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence.


Danielle Curtis

Assistant Coach - 16U Black

After wrapping up her BCO career in 2011 with Provincial Gold and National Bronze medals, Danielle played 5 years at SFU as a setter. She has been actively involved in the local coaching community for the past two years.





Alex Harvalias

Head Coach - 18U Black

Alex, or Harvey, has been involved in varsity volleyball for the past seven years, finishing his last two years of eligibility at the University of Saskatchewan last Spring. He started as a practice player in his second year at Capilano University and worked his way to a starting spot in his fourth year and helping the Blues capture a Provincial title in 2013. With experience coaching a variety of age and skill levels with various organizations, Harvey is eager to continue his coaching career with BCO and contribute to the development of the next generation of Canadian Volleyball players.


Tessa May

Assistant Coach - 18U Black

Tessa is in her second year with the SFU Women's Volleyball Team and played BCO from 16U-18U. In 2014, she was named 18U Provincial and National All-Star and was an unstoppable middle blocker on the National Championship squad.
